When talk turns to oral health and wellness, the conversation often sidesteps a crucial component: your gums. Given this common oversight, we’re not at all surprised that most people don’t realize September is National Gum Care Awareness Month.
If that sounds silly, it’s likely because you don’t realize how important your gums are to your overall wellness, not just your dental health. Without healthy gums, it’s impossible to have a healthy smile. In fact, neglecting your oral health at the detriment of your gums can actually cost you your teeth.
Rooted in Strength: Why Your Gums Matter
Not to put too fine a point on it, but the fact is your gums root your teeth in place. They are essentially the bedrock of your oral health and the strength of your smile. If your gums weaken over time because of neglect, you could wind up with gum disease, which threatens the secure placement of your teeth.
Gums also protect the roots of your teeth from bacteria that could wreak havoc over time. And this benefit extends beyond your oral health; poor gum health has been attributed to cardiac conditions and diabetes as a result of whole body inflammation.

In addition to these serious diagnoses, compromised gum health can lead to bleeding gums, gingivitis, and even periodontitis, a severe infection that weakens the bone structure supporting your teeth, which can lead to tooth loss.
Because all of these are best and easily avoided, we encourage all of our patients to commit to routine teeth brushing and flossing, twice a day, and to ensure that they have regular teeth cleanings scheduled every six months.
