Healthy, Non-Sugar Swaps for a Happier Halloween!

While it’s true that the occasional sweet treat won’t hurt your smile, the abundance of sugary options on Halloween can certainly cause cavities and tooth decay, if left unchecked. For that reason, we thought it made sense to offer some non-sugar suggestions for Halloween treats.

We’re sure these will still delight your trick-or-treaters… not to mention parents and guardians!

The Sticky Situation with Sugar

Whether or not you have a sweet tooth, the trouble with sugary snacks — whether sticky or sour candies — occurs when the bacteria in your mouth feeds on the sugar and produces acid that can the enamel that protects your teeth. If the enamel breaks down enough, you might find yourself dealing with tooth decay and even cavities. By skipping the sweets you protect your teeth and ensure your smile stays healthy.

Still, Halloween is too fun to miss, so load up your candy bowl with these non-sugar swaps…

  1. Sugar-free gum or mints: just like the real thing, these products actually help stimulate saliva which washes acid away from your teeth and gums. If you choose options made with xylitol you actually get extra protection against cavities. Bonus! For the best option, look for brands marked with the ADA Seal.
  2. Temporary tattoos and stickers: Stay on theme with Halloween versions!
  3. Glow bracelets or necklaces: We love the added illumination on a dark night. Safety first!
  4. Pencils, erasers, and other school supplies: Teacher-approved and fun to pack for the school day or homework routine.
  5. Mini playdoughs or pocket-sized slime: Okay, maybe not a hit with many parents, but definitely kid-approved!
  6. Non-sugar snacks like pretzels, popcorn, or cheese sticks. Many stores offer Halloween branded versions of these!
