Endodontics, or root canal treatment, is necessary when the nerve cells inside a tooth break down due to decay or trauma. While this often results in significant pain, it is not always the case. Dental x-rays are typically required to help our doctors make an accurate diagnosis. Once the problem tooth is identified, a root canal may allow you to keep the tooth for many years instead of needing an extraction.
While our doctors perform some root canals for their patients, there are times when referral to an endodontist, a specialist with advanced training in root canal therapy, may be necessary.
In many cases, after completing root canal therapy, our doctors will recommend placing a crown (cap) on the tooth to protect it. Teeth that have undergone root canal therapy can become dry and brittle over time, and a crown restores strength to help prevent fractures.
