Yep, it’s a thing!
With the increasing popularity of GLP-1 prescriptions, like Ozempic and Wegovy, dentists around the country are observing signs of what they dub, “Ozempic mouth” or sometimes “Ozempic teeth.”
So, what’s with this latest side effect? How bad is it and what, if anything, can be done about it?
Read on, friends!
Observations on Ozempic Mouth
With 12% of adults in the United States taking a GLP-1, which amounts to 1 out of every 8 people, it’s no wonder that side effects seem to be cropping up on a fairly consistent basis. One of these is “Ozempic mouth” or “Ozempic teeth.”
Symptoms can vary, but generally present as any or all of the following:
Clenching or grinding, which can wear down your teeth and enamel, potentially leading to TMD or temporomandibular disorders.
Another cause of enamel erosion or tooth sensitivity results from the acid reflux, nausea, and vomiting that some people experience when taking GLP-1. Research shows that gastrointestinal distress is very common, in fact, the most frequently reported side effect, with 40-70% of those on a GLP-1 experiencing nausea, and 10-30% experiencing vomiting.
It’s not hard to imagine, then, that oral health issues would follow these challenging symptoms.
No wonder dry mouth or xerostomia is another sign of “Ozempic mouth.”
These factors naturally create an ideal environment for gum disease to develop, which can lead to halitosis or persistent bad breath.
How Can I Offset Ozempic Teeth?
Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to avoid or manage these difficult side effects and each one is pretty simple!
First off, you want to stay hydrated, especially if you’re among those who suffer from the nausea and vomiting associated with GLP-1 prescriptions. Similarly, increasing saliva flow with sugar-free gum will also help keep, as will rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash.
You’ll want to really make preventive dental care a priority, meaning absolutely brushing and flossing twice daily.
