Trading Up for a Healthier Smile this Thanksgiving

If you’re among the 23% of Americans who claim Thanksgiving as their favorite holiday, this post is for you! While food is integral to most holidays, it really takes center stage on Thanksgiving and we’re here for it!

As dental professionals, we’re obviously also all about good oral health and hygiene, backed by expert dental care and prevention. In our opinion, festive food and healthy teeth can exist in harmony, provided you integrate a few smart substitutes in this year’s cornucopia.

Here, we’ve got six small choices you can make to better protect your teeth and gums from some traditional Thanksgiving favorites.

Whether you’re hosting or looking forward to being a guest around the table, these little holiday hacks should keep you smiling. You might even feel inspired to bring one as your contribution to the spread!

1. Choose Sparkling Water Over Sugary Drinks

As you well know, sweet teas, ciders, and sodas are loaded with sugar that fuels cavity-causing bacteria. Instead, why not try sparkling water with lemon or orange slices for a festive fizz? Another great option is unsweetened iced tea or herbal tea, for flavor without the sugar.

2. Go Easy on the Candied Yams

Traditional sweet potato casseroles are often topped with brown sugar, syrup, and marshmallows, a sticky, sugary combo that clings to teeth. While we wouldn’t dream of depriving anyone of a good Thanksgiving starch, we would recommend a more savory twist, such as roasted sweet potatoes with cinnamon and a drizzle of olive oil or mashed sweet potatoes with a touch of maple syrup and chopped pecans.

Either way, you’ll still get that warm, comforting sweetness, without the cavity risk.

3. Choose Crunchy Veggies Over Crackers

Crackers and chips tend to stick to your teeth, breaking down into sugars that feed bacteria. To tie you over before dinner, consider reaching for crisp celery, carrots, cucumbers, or apple slices, or a veggie platter with hummus or Greek yogurt dip.

Bonus! Crunchy fruits and vegetables also help scrub your teeth naturally while you chew.

4. Skip the Sticky Cranberry Sauce

Unless it’s homemade! Sure, this might make you sound like a food snob, but hear us out. Canned cranberry sauce is often high in sugar and can be acidic, which weakens enamel; however, homemade cranberry relish using fresh cranberries, orange zest, and a touch of honey still offers that tangy burst of flavor but with less enamel-eroding sugar.

5. Enjoy Cheese Before Dessert

Cheese lovers, rejoice! Cheese isn’t just a delicious snack, it can actually help neutralize acid in your mouth and protect enamel. Try adding a cheese board to your spread before dessert or alongside appetizers.

6. Make it a Sliver… a Small One.

Pumpkin pie and pecan pie are classic Thanksgiving treats, but their sticky fillings can linger on teeth. If you simply can’t resist (no judgement!), just have a small sliver. For other, less sugary options, enjoy fresh fruit with whipped cream or Greek yogurt for a naturally sweet ending.
